Understanding and coping with bereavement
He knows what tears are like and in heaven He can feel our weakness and infirmity still, when we weep in heart-breaking grief. Jesus asked for the stone to be taken away. Martha, always the practical one, expressed strong concern about opening the grave, as they knew Lazarus had been dead for four days and corruption would have set in. Maybe Martha thought that Jesus wished to see Lazarus have set in.
Maybe Martha thought that Jesus wished to see Lazarus again. Jesus however promised that if they still believed, they would see the glory of God. Lifting His eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed to His Father, and thanked Him for hearing His prayer. ‘And when He had thus spoken, He cried with a loud voice, LAZARUS, COME FORTH.’ And he that was dead came forth.’ John 11:1-46.
The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead is proof to us that the voice of Jesus can wake the dead and He will do it
again. He also raised Jairus’ daughter to life by speaking to her, ‘Damsel, I say unto thee arise.’ To the young man on the funeral bier, being taken out for burial, Jesus said ‘Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.’ ‘And he that was dead sat up.’ The word of God has power. It was the same power that created the world, when He spoke our world into existence.
When will He call again to awaken the dead?
It will be at the times of resurrection. ‘Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth, they that have done evil unto the resurrection
of damnation.’ John 5:28,29.
The Bible, however, tells us much more about the resurrection to life than the resurrection to damnation. Life is the theme of the whole Bible from the time God gave it to Adam and Eve in Genesis, through all the promises of life to the obedient in the Old and New Testaments, to the coming of Jesus Himself to our world - ‘I am come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly,’ and the help that is offered by Christ to aid us in receiving eternal life, right through to the Book of Revelation where we are told that
we can once again have access to the tree of life that Adam and Eve forfeited in Eden because of their sin. ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ John 3:16. ‘But now is made manifest, by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death and hath brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.’ 2 Timothy 1:10. This was why He came to die on the Cross when He was on earth.
God is longsuffering with us, not willing that any should perish.

Jesus said, ‘I am the Way the Truth and the Life.’ Jesus died to bring us reconciliation with God, but He also rose from the dead. This is the central point of our hope. ‘And if Christ be not raised, your faith is in vain, ye are yet in your sins. Then they which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.’ The resurrection of Christ is the guarantee of the resurrection of the dead.

Here is some more information from the Bible about how the righteous dead are called to life. ‘But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not even as others
