Where verses do refer to spirits, bodies and souls, that pattern is always the same. We have a body. This body has breath or spirit. The two together make a living soul, a living being.

Here are 2 simple illustrations of death using every- day objects. If the box is dismantled, it ceases to exist. When the power leaves the bulb, the light goes out.

If you put the wood and the nails together you have something useful – a box. Take it apart and there is nothing. The box does not live on somewhere else. But we could make it again.

If you take a light bulb - the body, there is no light, but add electricity - the breath from God, and there is light - life. Switch off the electricity again and it goes out. The light does not live on somewhere else. It has gone out - but can be lit up again. This is what God can do with us in the resurrection.

His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Psalm 146:4.
Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. John 11:25.
