WHAT ABOUT ANGELS? ARE THEY NOT THE SPIRITS OF THOSE WHO HAVE DIED? |
|
A little girl of about eight years of age lost her baby brother from a heart defect. When she came back to school I expected her to be very sad, but she was cheerful. As we walked home from school I asked her about what had happened and she said that her baby brother had been taken to become an angel, and how wonderful that was. This was the comfort that she had received from her family. Many people have similar beliefs, but how true is it? What does God say?
The Bible tells us about different orders of living beings. |
Hebrews 2.7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
|
Here we see that human beings are designed to be lower than the angels, but nonetheless to be creatures of glory and honour. We were given a specific work too. We were created to care for the works of God’s hands, the earth, the creatures on it and the plant life. When we read this, it shows how much we have fallen from God’s original plan for the human race.
We know that angels are very powerful beings, and that they move in a different way from us. The Bible talks about different kinds of angels, one order of angels being the four who serve nearest to the throne of God, the cherubim. |
Psalm 99.1 The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: He sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.
|
It was the cherubim that guarded the way to the Tree of Life after Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden.
Other angels are called seraphims, the ones that Isaiah saw in his vision. They had power to shake the building when just one of them spoke, praising God, |
Isaiah 6.1-4. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

Each angel has great power and brightness. We know several facts about angels. We know they can fly. They can sing, just as they did when Jesus was born,. They can speak. When Jesus comes back to this earth at the Second Coming, the angels will come with him. |
seems that, when they are seen by people on earth, they have some resemblance to us, as they are sometimes referred to as men.
Daniel saw a angel whom he came to know by name. When Daniel was praying to God asking about the people of Israel and their future and confessing the sins of his people, God sent the angel Gabriel to enlighten him |
|
Daniel 9:20, 21. And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; |
