Understanding and coping with bereavement

Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden to till the ground from whence he was taken. So He drove out the man and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way to keep the way of the tree of life. Genesis 3:23,24.

Now they discovered thorns and thistles. The animals were afraid of them, and got old and died. Their food was different. In Eden they had fruits and grains and nuts and seeds. Now the herbs of the field were added. These would have been the plants and vegetables that we know today. So, by God’s instructions, they were vegetarians.
Thou shalt eat the herb of the field. Genesis 3:18.
Everything was changed and very different for them both.
It was not many years before there was another death. Cain and Abel, the first two sons of Adam
and Eve, had been instructed how to bring an offering to the Lord. This was to remind them of the promise, symbolised for them in a lamb, that God would die to take their punishment. Abel who was a shepherd brought a lamb from his flock, but Cain who tilled the ground brought his fruits and vegetables. The Bible tells us that Abel’s lamb was accepted, but that God did not accept Cain’s sacrifice of fruit and vegetables. He did what he thought would be all right, but it was not what God had asked for.
Cain began by doing things his way and then, when it was not accepted, it brought out all his bitterness and a torrent of angry words. He hated Abel for his acceptance with God. Later, he met Abel in the field and murdered him.
Perhaps you can understand the grief that Adam and Eve would have felt. They had not seen a human being dead before, but here was the body of their son killed by Cain, his own brother.

Death and sorrow had come into the world, and both are still with us from that time till today. Where and how did they begin?
These problems did not just happen on earth spontaneously. They had begun in heaven some time previously. Lucifer, the anointed cherub that stood near the throne of God, became lifted up with pride because of his beauty, and wanted to be like God. Rebellion began and eventually there was war in heaven between Satan and his angels, and Christ and His angels. Satan the devil, was cast out of heaven into the earth.

And there was war in heaven: Michael and His angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great
dragon, that old serpent [mentioned in the garden of Eden] called the devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world; he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:7-9.

It was he who tempted Eve and deceived her in the Garden of Eden right at the beginning. Jesus said that the devil was a murderer and a liar from the beginning.

Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do.
