He was a murderer from the beginning. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44.

Death originates from the devil. The devil cannot make life, but he can destroy it. He continues to do so today by war, famine, disease and murder. By contrast the whole of the Bible offers life. |
And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life. John 5:40.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10.
I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: Deuteronomy 13:19.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16. |
The Bible begins in Genesis with the breath of life being breathed by God, into Adam. The Bible finishes with those, who have been obedient, having access to the tree of life, and being awarded crowns of life. |
Blessed are they that do His commandments that they may have right to the tree of life. Revelation 22:14.

Death and dying are not forever. One day the sad cycle will end.

|
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4.

It is good to realise that it is not God who is responsible for our misery here. God is a God of life. |

We are alive today because God gives us life, but it is a probationary life. He has given us this chance, in the same way as He did for Adam and Eve, to determine whether we will choose to obey Him and live, or choose to disobey and die. God’s law is still here today, too. The story of Adam and Eve is the story of our own roots. It is our history. The Bible background gives us a perspective for living today. It helps us understand why and how death has come into our world.
In order to understand the impact of the lives of Adam and Eve on our own times here are some more facts of interest. Earlier in the booklet we showed that Adam and Eve had just one commandment and, with it, they had one test. On that test hung life and death. Today in our own probationary time, we have Ten Commandments from God that match our situation today – and we have a test too. It is easy merely to say ‘I love you’ to God. God wants to give us life, but we have all rejected Him and denied Him. He needs a visible demonstration of our love, a test of our love, to see if we are safe to give eternal life to, and if we will love Him unwaveringly at all times. |
|
Within the Ten Commandments, there is a special and different commandment, the fourth commandment, one which does not begin with ‘Thou shalt not’. It begins with the gentle word, ‘Remember’ and tells us three important things about God. |
- It gives the title of God – ‘The Lord thy God’, for God is personal to each one of us.
- It also gives His territory over which He has jurisdiction – ‘heaven and earth.’ He therefore has the right to ask certain things of those to whom He has given life.
