  • It gives the reason for His authority – He is the creator of all. ‘The Lord made heaven and earth’ No one else can create or give life.
This commandment speaks of a day, the seventh day, Saturday, the Sabbath, the reminder that God created the world and gave us the life we each have. This is our test today, to acknowledge Him as our Creator.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11.

Adam and Eve had a ‘tree’ as their test of obedience. It was fair. We have a ‘day’ and that test is fair too. We all have a seven-day week originating from the first week of Creation recorded in Genesis, and therefore the seventh day is the test for us all. Creation is the only explanation for the weekly cycle. Saturday, the seventh day, a memorial of that creation week is the Holy Day that God has chosen for our test and, of course, if we keep that commandment, we will gladly keep the other nine.

To be obedient to all God’s commandments means LIFE for us.

For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: Proverbs 6:23.

The fourth commandment contains the signature of God in the heart of the Ten Commandments. It is His royal seal as Creator of all things and giver of life. God wants us to keep all that He has asked us to obey, His signature plus the other nine. He wants us to have life, full and glad and free for evermore. Jesus was asked this question, notice the answer:

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? … If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. Matthew 19:16,17

The tree was made by God. The day is made by God. We have to trust God and keep His day. Eve, regretfully, did not take God at His word, listened to the serpent and disobeyed God only to find disaster and death awaiting her and the weakness and leaning to rebellion has passed to us, as each generation has failed God. God calls to us today, to choose the way of life. He offers more than this world, with its pain, sorrow and death.
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue,
and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgement is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. Revelation 14:6,7
God gives us a choice just as He did for Adam and Eve.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey His voice, and that
