world that then was being overflowed with water perished. But the heavens and the earth which are now by the same word kept in store reserved unto fire against the day of judgement and perdition of ungodly men. 2 Peter 3:5-7.

It is clear from these verses that the final end of the wicked will be by fire just as previously God had destroyed the earth by water in the Great Flood. |
All in whose nostrils was the breath of life...died . Genesis 7:22
|
David in the Book of Psalms, and the prophet Isaiah in his writings describe the reward of sinners in a graphic way. They describe the fire and brimstone, as in other verses, but also tell of a storm such as never has been seen before, whipping up the flames and increasing the fury and cleansing power of the fire. |
Upon the wicked He shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.Psalm 11:6
Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire. Psalm 11:6
|
When it has done its work the fire will go out. There will be nothing left of sin or pollution to destroy. Something that is devoured is totally consumed. All that will be left are ashes. |
 |
Even Satan will be reduced to ashes.
Ezekiel 28:18 I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth.
God has already done this once before on a smaller scale with Sodom and Gomorrah.
All was destroyed, including the inhabitants, and the fire went out. They were devoured. They were consumed and burned up. God has demonstrated these fires previously and recorded it in His Word as a warning. It will happen again. |
|
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Luke 17:29-30
|
Lot had taken his family to live in that area because it was extremely fertile. |
watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Genesis 13:10
|
Because of the sinfulness of the inhabitants God warned in advance that the cities would be destroyed. |
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; and He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. Genesis 19:24-25

There is another verse of interest in Jude - |
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude verse 7.
